Giving and Finance

giving

The times when churches were rich are long gone. Nowadays most churches receive their income directly from the members of the congregation. St. Christopher's is no different - the only way we can pay our bills is through contributions by our members.

A lot of people don't realize how much it actually costs to "run" a church. For example, a vicar doesn't come free, he or she receives a (modest) salary. The church buildings need to be heated and maintained. There is administration to do. If you add it all up, it costs about £100,000 per year to run St. Christopher's.

Part of this amount of money is raised through renting out the church hall. The remainder comes from one off gifts and, most importantly, regular donations. We are extremely grateful to all those who support St Christopher's and make it possible to live our life in Christ together with our community of Hinchley Wood.

However, there are no two ways about it: St. Christopher's needs more donations in order to have a viable future.

We would be so grateful if you were to consider raising your monthly donation, or start a new one. It really would make a massive and much needed difference. Please have a look at our annual accounts to see where our money was spend last year.

Standing order
The most effective way to donate regularly is via standing order, where possible gift aided. St Christopher's is dependent on these recurring donations - please fill in the Standing Order and Gift Aid form and return it to the office.

Wills and legacies
Legacies are a fundamental part of Stewardship and Christian Giving; leaving a gift in your Will is one of the most valuable and lasting ways you can give thanks to God for the gifts of your life and lifetime.

All gifts to charities in wills are tax-free because gifts to your church and other charities are deducted from the value of your estate when inheritance tax (IHT) is calculated. As such, if you consider donating to your church, doing so through a legacy is a very tax efficient way.

Currently (2014-2015 tax year), IHT is payable on estates worth more than £325,000 at a rate of 40%. Moreover, if you leave gifts to charity (including churches) in your will totalling 10% (or more) of the value of your estate, the rate of IHT you pay will be only 36%.

Inheritance tax can be complicated, and you are advised to seek specialist tax advice if your estate is large or your affairs are complex. Please also visit http://www.churchlegacy.org.uk, the dedicated site by the Church of England designed to help you with this important decision.
